This Thurs? These are 2 up aren't they? Does anyone feel slow enough to partner me? For some reason I thought they started first week of April. Please volunteer for the 2ups with me if you wish, or do you partner up on the night?

Hello Peter, Are they 2-ups? Where are they? Can't do this week, but I'll have a go next week if you want to pair up. You may want someone else to give you a wheel - I've had 2 weeks off bike sick so I'll be struggling to beat evens

Thursday night courses change weekly. You need a map and a particularly good eye for detail to find them, well if you are anything like me....all those country roads look the same. You should be able to find out each weeks address on the notice board, check Time Trial section.

to John - Flying Welshman - When I was last talking to you about Compact chainsets - did you say 50/36 & 12/ 25. What happened you the other saturday? I thought you were right behind the rest of us.

Steve, Sorry about the other saturday. Total incompetence on my part to get lost like that, I hope you didn't hang around for me too long, but pressed on with your ride. I have a 36/50 and 12/25 on my winter bike, but have ordered a 34/50 as this appears to be a better combination. I also replaced the chainset on my winter bike because I wanted to use 170 cranks to match my other bikes. My short legs suffer with standard cranks. I've been typically obsessive and worked out all the gear combinations to try and get an optimum combination. Basically my legs aren;t strong enough so unlike some people I know, I can't grind an 11 sprocket all day. And so I got my spreadsheet out and worked through all the combinations and have purchased some new cassettes to try and acheive the gearing holy grail. Basically, campag 10 speed, 12/25 has 4 2-teeth gaps in it. If the 2-teeth gap is on a small-ish sprocket, you get an 8.5 inch gap, which I don't like. This is why I don't like the 12/25 cassette and I'm only using it as a temporary measure because the previous cassette was worn out. I think a compact chainset better allows you to get a wider spread of gears with closer ratios. The conclusion from my calculations is this: ...........34/50 ............. 39/53 ..........Low .. High ...... Low High 11-21 42.58 119.55 11-23 38.88 119.55 12-23 38.88 109.58 .. 44.60 116.16 12-25 35.77 109.58 .. 41.03 116.16 13-26 34.39 101.15 .. 39.45 107.22 The 11/21 on a compact is very close ratio and gives fairly low gears, ideal for racing on all but very hilly. The 11/23 is a good hilly race comination. Closer ratios yet still better climbing and sprinting gears. The 12/25 I don't like vbecause of the gaps, but for a general training/sportive block the 13/26 is good, though its going to be a handicap at the thirty signs. Also the 13/26 will mean on the flat you'll likely be in the big ring, ie at around 65+ inches. If you go compact, definetely go for a 34/50. This is ideal for the hills round here and hilly sportives. Spare chainrings aren't available. The centaur costs about 60 quid. It is recommended to use a 111 bottom bracket. You may have a 102, so you may want to get a chorus/record instead. Also recommended is compact front mech, but I've seen standard front mechs on compacts working ok. I also think the 111 bottom bracket is probably uneccessary. I bought the lot, centaur for about 110 quid. Ribble are currently selling record carbon compacts at a snip for 250 quid. Peter, you bought those fulcrum wheels yet ? I'm thinking of getting some campag eurus - light as fulcrum/ksyrium and 400 notes. Never bought campag wheels before, not sure of that weird spoke pattern. Anyone know if they are stiff and robust enough ?

John Look forward to trying to stay on your wheel if you are up for it, hope I am able to give you a drag for a while! Just took delivery of the kharma complete with shimano compact 50 34 and 12 25 cassette. So am looking forward to seeing how it goes. Hope to see some drier weather to get it out now! No excuses now, so must try harder!
As for the campag spoking. A friend had a set and they stayed very true with no hassle until hit from the side by a car which of course left them rather bent. His new wheels are normal spoke pattern and he is for ever fiddling.

John, still procrastinating and tyre kicking with regard to wheels, will probably go for the Fulcrums next month although the Neutrons classic looks still appeal! Did look at the Eurus but the G3 pattern not to my taste.
A sensible option maybe to go for the Neutrons and a compact chainset which will make life at the Wicklow slightly more bearable.
I saw the reviews of the Kuota Kharma in the comic the other week and have spent the last two weeks trying to persuade a mate to invest in one, great value for money, if I could justify it I would solve my dilemmas with a completely new bike....and then there is reality.
Won't be out for the timetrial this week I have commitments on a Thursday, hope to be out for a run on Sunday

In typical style, the mouse pointer could linger over the BUY NOW button for only so long before the clicking started and so the campag wheels have been ordered. Still not convinced that the G3 pattern is going to be very robust but I'll soon find out. Richard, how can you not know what chainrings you have!

Call me old fashioned ... but I believe that pedalling makes you go faster, not chain rings, although I wouldn't mind getting a new machine. I might have to wait a little while or the wife may go mad. You see John bachelor life has it's advantages. Rode over Drumbo hills on Winter Bike, that was much harder than any of that cycling in Majorca. A real man embraces a headwind.

I saw a few Kuota bikes in Majorca - I think numpty's hire bike was a Kharma or Kredo. Ex-Pro Marcel Wurst gave the Kredo a glowing review last year in one of the comics. If I win the lottery the Kredo is on my shopping list - after the Ferrari, the house in Spain, the...

Well no matter how good the bike, the rider could definitely be better! Suffered tonite at the hands of Bob, whose time suffered even more.
