Review of VAR tyre lever in CYCLE the Magazine of the CTC - by Sheila Simpson Apr/May issue 2007.
"On a recent holiday, I was horrified to discover that women were dependent on the men in the event of a puncture. All were experienced tourists but the ladies had insufficient strength to reseat a tyre on a rim and had no means of doing this. In fact, the problem was solved over 20 years ago by the VAR tyre lever. This is a pair of nylon levers, one a simple hook, the other a hook with a wishbone-shaped arrangement. The hook prises a tyre from its rim in the usual way and, when the inner tube is mended or replaced, the wishbone reseats the tyre. Simply seat the tyre until the point where about 25 cm of the bead, fit the slot in one arm onto the rim (on the side of the tyre which is already seated), hook the other arm under the unseated tyre bead, and lever it into the rim. Don’t try to get too much tyre on at once, just repeat until the job’s done."
You can get the VAR tyre lever from several on-line cycle suppliers.
