I have been the proud owner of a trek 5500 for the last 4 years, keeping in good nick, replacing the usual wear when needed. Bear in mind that it hardly gets out at all never mind a wet day due to the tandem and winter bike.
Last year the bottom bracket went so I ordered one from chain reaction and removed the old one. To my surprise it was NOT dura ace like the rest of the groupset but the much heavier sealed ultregra.
I contacted them, got a reply from England. Seat post is not dura Ace so why should you expect a dura ace BB or words to that effect.
I replied because it is part of the drive chain which is the main part of the groupset.
They forwarded the matter to USA who said they made compromises in some parts in order to give value for money or words to that effect.
After seeing this link tonight on Banbridge message board I sent Trek the message below
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190111108152&ssPageName=ADME
some time back I contacted you regarding my dismay at finding an Ultregra BB fitted to my 2003 5500. A bike fitted with a durace groupset. Before you come off with the same crap again about little difference ETC ETC the BB is part of a groupset and a dura ace is a big step up from ultregra.
Not happy with your reply I have decided to publish the matter including your reply to the internet.
I think I will have to point out that all that looks good on the surface may have something to hide on the inside. Bit like some of your team riders in the past?
Trek, what a dopey bike
