I bought new wheels in Cyle Zone in Lisburn a few weeks ago. The shop mechanic fitted the tyres for me so I had no reason to suspect anything. Davy Robb mentioned he got the same wheels and had a devil of a job fitting Michelin Pro Race 3 type on the wheels and Contintenal tyres were even worse. Well I had a puncture on the Dromara Coastal and could hardly get my Michelin Pro Race 3 tyre off and it was impossible to get back on without serious forcing with a tyre level - yes it pinced the replacement tube and that was my day over. The sun was shining and the tyre was soft and pliable so goodness knows what would happen on a cold day. I am going back to Cycle Zone to have a serious word with Derek (the owner). The wheels seemed a bargain at the time - now I probably know why. Some particular tyre might fit these wheels better but I cannot recommend these wheels for anything other than racing use (where you have a mechanic to change your wheels).

stephen, i have noticed in the past that on some rims continental tyres are very hard to install / remove, and to a lesser extent michelin's. I have found that Victorria's seem to fit these rims easier ( i think i read somewhere Continental make to very precise / exact measurement where-as Italian manufacturers seem to make a little bigger ) if you are stuck with the wheels maybe try some victorria's or some other brands as there can be a lot of variance between tyre manufacturers

What a bummer, Stephen. Sorry to hear your day at the Coastal was ruined. I wouldn't have been too happy if it was me. Hope you get it sorted, bu I'm sure you'll be reluctant to ride with those wheels again.

UPDATE... went to Cycle Zone and the mechanic said he had no trouble fitting Continental tyres on to his own Pro Lite wheels and then Derek (the owner) proceeded to fit my tyres on my wheel with just the force of his hands. Well I know I am getting older and I have a touch of arthritis in my hands but I still could not get them on yet I can get my tyres on any of my other Mavic, Bontrager and Ambrosio wheels and I have changed the punctures for other people. I recommend that if you are thinking of buying these wheels then bring your own favourite tyre and tube combination down to Cycle Zone and try to fit them on the wheels BEFORE you buy them. If you can fit them on with your hands then you are the very person these wheels are suitable for.

Sold the wheels and bought a pair of Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheels instead. Just for a challenge I also bought a pair of Continental GP4000 tyres that people say are generally difficult to fit to any wheel. Well guess what - the brand new GP4000 tyres went on easy as anything - no tyre levers, talcum powder or fairy liquid needed. My recommendation is... stick to well known brands with a long and proven reputation in the industry.

Just bought a set of Mavic Ksyrium Elites and had absolutely no problem fitting my Schwalbe Ultremo ZX's to them. They run sweet as a nut and look rather dapper too. Reviews are spot on for them on the reliable sites. Mavics are hard to deny or rule out if you're in the market for a set of wheels.
