Please see the below results from the Cycling Ireland Membership Awards that were announced last Saturday night. These are annual awards voted by the members online, which are increasing in popularity. Please post on your website, or distribute information, thank you.
CYCLING IRELAND MEMBERSHIP AWARDS: RESULTS
Thanks to everyone for voting, there was a huge increase in the number of votes received this year, so hopefully the new online voting system is proving successful! While there were some clear winners in the awards, many of the results were tight. A notable mention has to go to the volunteer awards, with over 50 volunteers receiving votes, and only a couple of votes separating the top 2.
2010 Competitive Event:
Rás na mBan. This is the second year that Rás na mBan received the award, it is the only women's international stage race in Ireland, and is held at the end of the season in Sneem Hotel. The mixture of the end of season wind up, and in form racers ensures that a great weekend is had by all, and Louis Moriarty in Sneem Hotel always puts on a show. Next year will the 25th anniversary of the race, and big plans are in place to increase it to a 5 day event. Other big favourites in the competitive events were Rás Mumhan, Dundrum Crit League, the FBD Rás and the Leinster Track Championships.
2010 Leisure Event:
Tour of Louth. This year saw a huge surge in the interest in Leisure events, and the 45% increase in the Cycling Ireland membership predominantly lies in the leisure tour category. Cuchulainn CC hosted this tour, amongst many more events to celebrate their 75 years. Other big hits in the Leisure events were the An Post Series, and the Dromara Leisure events.
2010 Club of the Year:
Cuchulainn CC. This year Cuchulainn CC celebrated 75 years of cycling, and hosted many events including the National Criterium Championships. Headed by Karl Dolan the club has increased their membership to just short of 200 members, one of the largest clubs in Ireland. Their membership is a good cross section of people, with a large female and youth membership. A very deserving and clear winner in the 2010 Cycling Ireland club of the year.
2010 Volunteer of the Year:
Valerie Considine. This tightly fought competition highlights the value of all our volunteers, with the volunteers, there would be no Cycling Ireland. Valerie Considine has been a member of the women's commission since its inauguration in 2002, and has been responsible for building a healthy racing scene for women's cycling in Ireland. As the chairperson of the commission (this is her last year) Valerie co-ordinates the running of training camps and leagues around the country, while being the High Performance liaison for most of the elite riders. A notable mention must go to Martin Grimley from Dromara CC, who lost out be a mere 4 votes.
Many thanks everyone for voting for me. I really appreciate this.
2010 Overseas Performance:
Nicolas Roche. Nicolas, who was present on the night to answer questions (and pose in many photos) was a clear winner thanks to top 15 performances in the Tour de France, and Top 10 in the Vuelta. The Tour de France is on the of the best known and longest sporting events in the world, to have an Irish rider in this event producing world class performances has lifted the nation. Notable mentions go to Dan Martin for his win in the Tour of Portugal, and our two world champions, Mark Rohan and Orla Hendron.
2010 Domestic Male Rider of the Year:
Donal Bailey. This Orwell rider in his first year cycling got a bronze in the elite sprint championships on the track, with the backing of Ireland's biggest cycling club Donal secured male rider of the year, over strong contenders like Martyn Irvine (who recently came 9th in the European Championships), Adam Armstrong and winner of the Classic League, Sean Lacey.
2010 Domestic Female Rider of the Year:
Orla Hendron. World Masters Champion in the Points race, and national bronze medalist in the scratch race, Orla Hendron, was an outright winner in the event. The veteran rider is one of Ireland's top performers, and proves that age is but a number when it comes to winning races.
Congratulations to all our winners and runners up.
Regards,
Heather Boyle
