At a gala awards dinner last Friday 29th October 2010, Dromara Cycling Club were awarded the,
Draynes Farms Sport Lisburn Club of the year for 2010.
This award is a recogition of the great effort put in by Dromara CC to include all types of cycling.
Dromara Cycling Club (DCC) won the Cycling Ulster club of the year and were runners up in Draynes Farm sports awards in 2009. We also received a grant of £500 from Sport Lisburn, to help develop cycling for both youth and ladies.
DCC now has a membership of 210 people representing a 72% increase from 2009. This includes 44 members under the age of 18 and 32 ladies. This dramatic growth in membership has resulted from the club’s policy of promoting family events. For example, we run a six event winter trailquest league, for adults teams a 3.5 hour endurance event, or a separate 2 hour event for a team with a member under 18. Participation in under age racing has never been higher, with 33 children under the age of 8 years recently taking part in a Mountain bike race. One of our junior rides, 17 year old Ryan Mallon, recently won a Silver medal in the Ulster Time Trial Championships. With the support of Lisburn City council we will be holding a Cyclo-Cross race at the Lisburn Island Centre on 7th of November and record numbers are expected.
The Dromara CC association to the “Bikedock Belles” three of whom are DCC members, has attracted many more ladies into cycling. During the summer months there have been ladies only groups on a Wednesday evening. A team of Dromara Ladies led by numpty Patterson recently won the title at the Ulster Time Trial championships. numpty and fellow team member Mary Hunter were also selected for a Cycling Ulster team which took part in an international stage race in Kerry last week. numpty unfortunately was involved in an accident and had to spend a long period in hospital recovering from head injuries.
Dromara Cycling club also hold a 24 event summer league on a Thursday evening, with separate prizes for youth and ladies leagues. This league is by far the largest in Northern Ireland with over 60 club members taking part in the Harry Ferguson Memorial Committee sponsored road race in August and a total of 94 club members competing in the overall league.
Dromara also hold a number of leisure cycling events which help to raise money for charities. To-date in 2010 we have donated £3000 to the Northern Ireland Children’s Cancer Fund and their excellent facility at Shimna Valley in Newcastle. A number of other smaller donations have also been made to other local special causes.
The Dromara CC Coastal tour of County Down in May had a record entry of 222 cyclists. The infamous “Hilly 100”, now incorporates a separate youth tour led by experienced adults, and remains the toughest one day leisure event in Ireland. This year we attracted a total of 257 entries. Dromara also hold an annual Children’s Gymkhana as part of the Dromara Village festival which this year attracted nearly 60 children. We are also helping The Hillsborough Girls Brigade to raise funds by holding a similar event on Saturday 25 September. We have also run a cycling proficiency badge for a local scout troop.
Our commitment to growing the club continues with five members taking their Cycling Ireland foundation coaching course on Saturday 25 September, including female road racer Mary Hunter.
