© Shane Stokes Following growing rumours about the Tour of Ireland, the organisers yesterday confirmed that the race will not take place in 2010, but that they hope it will return next year.
It was due to take place between August 18th – 22nd but a financial shortfall has put paid to that. “Despite significant commercial and public sector funding, current economic conditions have meant that the additional investment required to make the event viable has not been forthcoming in time for this season,” the organisers said in a statement.
The race returned in 2007 after a long absence. The previous incarnation was titled the Nissan Classic, and ran until 1992.
It is understood that some of the sponsors were happy to continue this year, but that more backing was necessary. “We fully intend to bring it back for 2011 when the private sector environment is stronger,” said organiser Alan Rushton.
The 2009 race was won by British rider Russell Downing.

What cloud is he living on? Private sector environment stronger in 2011 - you must be joking. Wait until the Budget cuts kick in later this year and the VAT goes up in the New Year!
Of course that is why I am not in PR or marketing and work with computers! At least they communicate nonsense in binary - click, click, whrrr...010100100011100101001 - what's that you say?
