- 2 coaches assigned to each group with a maximum of 8-10 riders
- Group pace adapted to the level of fitness of participants
- All riders will be assessed by a coach and advised on how to enhance their training/fitness
- The weekend distance averages between 20km to 80km per day
- Practical hands-on demonstration on basic bike maintenance
- Advice on how to buy a bike
A couple of us in the club have attended a few of these training weekends and they are always well run and very informative. if you are interested click on the below link and just send an email to queries@womenscycling.ie just to say to you all this is ideal for people who have not yet started racing etc or even those who have no intentions of racing. NOTE: Any events run by the UWA (Ulster Womens Association) only requires a club competition licence, or if the women is a beginner and hasn't joined a club yet they can take out a one-day licence. Outside of those events it is obviously an open licence. Thanks. Louise

Five Dromara riders turned out for the Cycling Ulster Women's Association Training Day - Ann Maguire, Val O'Neill, Sonia McLaughlin (in her Dromara shorts), numpty Patterson and myself. There were about 25 taking part. The first part of the day was the cycle which took us through Randalstown, Ahoghill, Cullybackey and back to Ballymena. Conditions were quite good, with just a fine mist of rain at times, but otherwise nice and sunny. The roads were full or pot-holes, some really big ones, and lots of muck on the Portglenone Road, which resulted in four or five riders crashing, as far as we know, no-one badly hurt. It was a realitively flat run with just a couple of long dragging hills, one called the Tully. Then it was back to fitness first for a spinning session, which was really great and positive, and enjoyed by everyone. really good loud upbeat music and a great instructor, who name escapes me. After that it was showers and on to Drumsilly Hotel for a lovely lunch, which was subsidised by Cycling Ulster (If we'd known that at the start we'd have ordered fillet steaks and dessert instead of sandwiches and salads and sharing an apple crumbl between 5 of us. The day was really well organised and only cost us a few pounds each, so we all got out for a meal for Valentine's Day - we thought Tommy Lamb or Ryan Connor might have presented us all with a rose, but it was not to be!. Marian Lamb took lots of photos which will no doubt be in her report - she even came into the spinnng class to snap us all sweating, puffing and panting, she stopped just short of bringing the camera into the showers. There's a weekend for Women next weekend at Meelmore Lodge, but I think we'll just be out with the club. Great day, great crack and an average of 16mph. Thanks to Ryan, Marian Tommy and all involved.

FROM numpty
First race in the Womens League will be the Phoenix Grand Prix at Nutts Corner in two weeks time. A nice easy circuit and the Race will be only 24 miles long. I hope to see everyone take part. All that is required is a club racing license.

FROM LOUISE FULLERTON
Hi All,
Ciara McManus has provisonally booked Meelmore Lodge at Trassey near Newcastle for the training weekend on 20/21st, with the following timetable:
Saturday 9.30 am meeting & registration 10am - 12.30: group rides (mtb and road) 1pm - 2pm: Lunch 2pm - 6pm: coaching presentations & workshops (conference room) Sunday: Breakfast 10am - 12.30: group rides (mtb and road) 1pm - 2pm: Lunch 2pm - 4pm: coaching presentations & workshops (conference room) with the provision for a strength/core session on Saturday and hopefully yoga on sunday and coaching presentations. There is a cafe on site for people to get lunch and we can be supplied a 3 course dinner as part of the weekend package. We had a brilliant nutrition lecture on the last training day but we felt we needed more info on "on the bike" eating, so perhaps something about race day/training nutrition. Ciara was also was thinking more of training aids (i.e working with heart rate, zones etc, training diaries such as training peaks) and perhaps - i'm not too sure how relevant this is or how appropriate it is for this kind of session - some sort of information on the types of training involved for competing; aerobic endurance, on the bike strength work such as overgeared work, threshold & interval training, the aims behind these forms of sessions and their application - not going into too much detail just enough to get people thinking about their training methods and perhaps allowing them to tailor their training to whether they prefer RR/TT/MTB. Kay Hack has also offered to do a session on strenght/core work. There maybe an extra cost for yoga session but Ciara is waiting for confirmation, costs are based upon an anticipated attendance of c.15 women. CU will subsidise some of these these costs, to be confirmed but Ciara has suggestede that the weekend will potentially cost between £25 - £30 per person. We need some firm comitment on numbers so if you could let me know your intention of attending so I can let Ciara know asap I'd appreciate it. I'll then let you know who to make the payment out to and where to send it. Look forward to hearing from you. Cheers, Louise
