After some light afternoon rain the sky cleared and it turned out to a perfect autumn evening and feeling mild.
six out Alan, Dennis, Jonathan, Pete, first timer Colin and me, altought of course I was only there because I had been promised money. Stewart came to wave us off, but looked as if he should have been in bed, and Kenny was also reported as sick. Martin was in Dublin working and must be busy as he has not even sent me too many emails.
Started at 7.05 after our MP "Boff" drove staright up and through the barrier that never opens, hardly needed to slow down.,
Followed the tradition early season route over the footbridge at Edenderry and up towards the Gaints Ring. These were new paths to Colin and we had already meet to other groups out on Mountain bikes, he was very impressed. It was suprising how soft some patchs of the Gaints ring path had got after just one days proper rain, one of these bringing Jonathan down.
In the Gaints Ring we meet six more out on their mountain bikes, just time for me to sell the Trail Quest league.
We headed down the cobbled lane, I clipped the mirror on that badly parked Pegeout 205, but we both escaped unhurt. On into Belvoir, I took the wrong path after the car park, but we found are wway back on track. The paths along the river were in great condition and the speed was fast, Alan is flying, althougt he kept telling me Dennis would "eat him up"?
Colin was starting to flag a little so I kept a slow pace at the rear on the Climbs of Lagan Meadows, waiting at the top of each hill, Colin needs better lights, as do I. After that hairy decent beside the steps, hope Peter S is okay after his fall here last week, we headed on at a gentle pace, which suited me fine, on to the climb to Malone House. This was a real suprise to Colin, but he made it up okay, which was more tahn Pete did, as my lights lite up his yellow jacket as he sailed though the air. You need to stay to the left on the decent after malone House!. After a trip to Mary Peters track all was well on the tow path, or so I thought!.
I started to feel the bumps just before Drumbeg and stopped to put some air in thinking it was not going down to fast. I even trying riding out of the saddle, not that easy, with front air forks that need more air and a front tyre that had too much air, felt very dodgey on the corners. So just before Lambeg it went bang as the valve sheared off. The others had gone on, as I am big boy. Quick change of tube outside the Coke plant and sped on as fast as my tired legs would go, meeting Alan a hundred yards from the end coming lloking for me. Back at 9.35 a great night. Colin said it was very tough, but he hoped to be back next week and bring six mates with him.
Big news on the night is that Alan will take part in the MTB support race on 1ST November, if Dennis does, so the pressure is on!
