Dromara CC welcomes all new members especially ladies and youth. Our female membership is now 19 far more than any other cycle club and hopefully we will be able to encourage many of these to take part in not only the winter trail quest leage but also next years Thursday league. Bike Dock in Belfast are kindly sponsoring the "Dromara" team for the race around Ireland. They have designed and supplied a special ladies kit for the event. I on behalf of the club wish them well. Dromara CC will be assisting to run a check point on the Malone Road Belfast during the event. Martin will provide a day and time and I hope that three or four club members will help out then.

The kit will not have Dromara CC on it. Since Bikedock are paying for the kit and providing support vehicles it is their call what they put on the jerseys. The ladies are unlikely to have any Dromara kit on while doing the event as we have not sold them any. Our stocks are low but also club members do not have to buy the kit. Perhaps our support will encourage these members to join us at some more of our events and perhaps when new stock arrives they may wish to purchase. The team event starts at 8pm on Wednesday 16th September 2009 north of Dublin. It is expected that the teams will reach the first time station in Ballymascanlan (Co. Louth) between 10pm and midnight. The second time station will be at the BP station on the Malone Road in Belfast. Teams are expected to reach this time station between 1am and 4am on Thursday 17th September. I have volunteered to man the station during this time. Hopefully I will not be standing there on my own Their next time station is at the Giant's Causeway which they are expected to reach between 4 am and 7 am. This is a tough event for all competitors. The teams have 5 days (120 hours) to complete the 1,350 miles. That is 270 miles per day, 67 miles per person per day for a four person team. We wish them all success.

Correction to the above supplied by Andrea. The teams have 96 hours to complete the 1,350 miles (The solo riders get the 120 hours). Therefore, per day, the teams have to cover 337.5 miles (over 84 miles per person per day for a 4 person team) and they need to maintain at least 14 miles per hour average over the 4 days.

Hey Guys, Thanks for all your very kind support, we are all really looking forward to the event and hope we can get a few more girls involved along the way to partake in more competitions and leisure rides next season. I'm looking forward to the cyclo x starting, lots of energy to burn from being out of the saddle 7 weeks... I might just have a whip around and buy me a nice Dromara cc Jersey for next season, pity the colours on my KTM don't match... (sad I know!!)

Thanks so much for all the support. It'll be great to see friendly faces at the Malone Rd checkpoint! Averaging 14mph a day doesn't sound too bad, until thoughts of Irish weather, bumpy Irish roads & dark middle of the night windy coastlines. Brrrrr But we'll get through it! The trail quests were great fun last year, so already looking forward to those again. Have never tried cyclo x - I've been wanting to though since reading about it on the club website last winter - was a bit nervous as I know nothing about it, so it'll be great having friends in the club also doing it. Brilliant! Can't wait to try that out! Good excuse to buy another bike!

The links to all of their charities are at the bottom of the write up on the main website. From the link that Ross put up you can click on the Photos (8) to see the Bikedock Belles new kit. Nice and pink !!

I arrived at the BP station on the Malone Road at midnight. Quick chat to the guys behind the glass in the service station. They knew nothing about the race Settled down to do some work for my 'work' (to keep the brain ticking over). At 12:45 the first of the support vans showed up, Team LMFM. Chatted to the guys in the van. They weren't expecting their rider for a few hours. At 1am one of the Bikedock vans showed up with Julie and Cathy inside. The team was split in two with Julie and Cathy working together and Andrea and Taryn out on the road doing the stint from Newry up to Belfast. The Bikedock Belles were the last 4 person team to head off, each team was separated by a 5 minute gap therefore they did not get started from Navan until 8:45. Around 1:10 the first of the teams went through, "Team No Prior Experience" were motoring. Julie and Cathy took a nap while I continued chatting to more of the teams that showed up. A big caravan of vans showed up for the "An Post Conaught" team who did a hand over out on the road where another rider took over. It was all done so quickly I barely got a photo. With the teams under no obligation to stop at the time station you only got a quick shout as a team went flying past heading on down the Malone Road. The race organiser Emmet Roche was there and I spent some time chatting to him about the race organising and getting the gossip from the solo riders who had left the night before. Stories of people getting lost and taking short cuts abound. Shortly after 2 am some of Julie's family showed up with hot soup and pasta. Vince, one of the Belles' support team, got the call that Andrea and Taryn were only 15 minutes away. They arrived around 2:45 with Taryn on the bike followed their support van. After a bit of admin, chat and rest stop Cathy took over the cycling setting off for the Giant's Causeway. The team were making adjustments to their ride times with Julie and Cathy charged with the job of getting the team to the next time station. I stayed to chat to Andrea and Taryn before heading home at 3am. I informed Andrea that the other teams were talking about her. On the big climb up through the Cooley Mountains she was heard to shout "I'm loving this!!!" with a large grin on her face. The team had managed to get ahead of two others by the time they got to the BP station. For more info on the race go to www.racearoundireland.com

Message from Julie (from the other van) 08:37 "On our way to Malin Head, just did a radio interview at 97.2. Andrea and Taryn on bikes to Malin then Cathy and I to Letterkenny."

Update from Julie (10:05) "...Down to 15 mile stints each until Letterkenny. Less rest period but hills are hateful. Hard stage from Belfast to Broughshane, mostly climbs. Doing well though and SMOKED one of the guys into the Causeway Check Point. Provided v good entertainment." Update from Andrea (10:10) "9 am went into Radio Ulster for interview and as a dedication they played our catchy RAI tune "Littlest Hobo"! 15 miles to Malin Head...well ahead of schedule" The Bikedock Belles have a Facebook page which they are also keeping updated. Our IT bods here are not keen on us accessing Facebook so you'll have to find the link yourself.
