Apparently we have a new German sounding Stephen participating. Details of route
The race kicks off on Friday 30th June at 7pm with laps of the Warrenpoint circuit. Sponsored by the Olive Art House and Coffee Company, Sugar Quay, Newry, this will be a superb stage for spectating, with the peleton moving at speeds of 30mph and riders using everything from elbows to shoulders to position themselves for the sprint!
The Mourne Windows 60 mile road stage follows at 10:30 on Saturday morning using the popular Kilcoo circuit, taking in the rolling terrain around Hilltown, Kilcoo and Rathfriland. A 3:30 pm start in the afternoon sees the riders tackling the Warrenpoint dual carriageway in the Bank of Ireland backed individual time trial.
The real sting in the tail of the race is kept to the last day, with a couple of testing climbs that will split the riders. Leaving Warrenpoint at 11 am, the peleton will pass through Newry, Gilford, Banbridge and Castlewellan, before tackling the energy sapping climbs though Bryansford and up to Spelga Dam. The fast descent into Kilkeel will provide some respite, with the stage finishing along the sea front at stage sponsors Whistledown Inn and Finn?s Bar, Warrenpoint.
The race is now in its 19th year and has attracted a capacity entry of 120 riders. Among those taking part are ex champions including Sean Bracken from the Dublin Usher Team, Bo Graham from the Terry Dolan squad and Kirk Sloan from Ards. Other riders who are looking in good form are Maurice Rodthingy from Phoenix (stage winner last year) and Sean Gray from the Orchard Wheelers club.
As usual, there will be stiff competition among the riders for the various jerseys. Up for grabs will be the King of the Hills jersey (sponsored by Noel McKinley Building Contractor) for the best climber, the Points jersey (sponsored by Around a Pound, Hill Street, Newry) and the All Event jersey supported by Revolution Bike Store, 7 Sugar Quay, Newry. F. McParland Demolition and Plant Hire have also generously provided prizes in the Junior and Veterans category. The team competition sponsored by The Currency Exchange, Newry should also be closely contested with strong teams from Newbridge, Phoenix, Apollo and the local Newry Haldane Fisher Squad.
Keep yourself informed by logging onto www.newrywheelers.com for up to date news on the race and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible out on the stages!
