At 5:30 I heard the weather forecaster say that we would not be having a frost tonight (Thursday). Good start I thought ! However, there were only 3 + me at the Civic Centre at 7 pm. Alan was over his flu and ready for the off, Stewart was there, keen as usual, Trevor was back (possibly looking for money from the cyclists who didn't show up) and he all fired up after the last couple of weekends out on the road bike.
We set off at a brisk pace, Stewart and Trevor up front, with hardly a breeze there was no holding them back. The path was mucky so we decided to give the Ring a miss at it would have been a mud bath. We headed into Belvoir for the usual circuit. Trevor, however, was giving us no time to stop to catch a breath never mind a drink. If you slowed up at all he was slagging you off, calling you unfit etc. He really was cracking the whip tonight and Alan, Stewart and I felt it. I have never been so knackered climbing up to the car park in Belvoir. As soon as Trevor got to the car park we were off again! Crikey. He was out to whip Stewart and Alan into shape for this season's Thursday night events.
Back onto the tow path and Stewart and I took the lead to help slow the pace back down to a reasonable level. We got to Strandmillis then turned and headed into Lagan Meadows. Trevor was no sooner through the gate before he was off again. I sprinted hard to get to the front and stayed there. We had to take it a bit easier going down through the dips as there was quite a bit of mud around. Alan, Stewart and I made it out first back onto the tow path but again, as soon as Trevor arrived he squeezed past us and took the lead. Alan and I took a bit of time to catch up with him and then went ahead to set the pace. At Shaw's bridge Trevor was all for heading straight on but given the fact the he had pushed us so hard up to this point we INSISTED that he head up the path to Malone House. We finally did take a break at the top before heading on down the path, around Mary Peter's and then the three of us (minus) Trevor went through the newly formed BMX jumps.
We met Trevor on the path at the bottom. The pace remained high on the way back but this time Trevor was at the back. He didn't falter though and kept pushing us on. Stewart broke off at Hilden and I rode up front with Alan as my lights had gone out. Back to the car park for 9. I didn't get the average time but it was definitely higher than normal.
Great night out.
Roll on next week.
