The Challenge!!!
On September 16th 2009 Ireland will host the inaugural Race Around Ireland Challenge. This is a 1,350 mile Non-Stop race on bicycle that loops around the entire country passing some of Ireland’s most famous landmarks, taking in magnificent scenery and crossing the countries highest mountains.
Unlike other famous Irish cycling races such as the FBD insurance RAS, the course is in no way roped off and there are no marshals controlling traffic flow. There are no planned rest stops or stages in this event. In The Race Around Ireland, once the clock starts it won’t stop until each cyclist reaches the finish line at the end of the 1,350 mile circuit. This is designed to be one of the most gruelling cycling challenges in the World.
Teams are not made up of professional racers but ordinary people wishing to take part in not just a race but an adventure, an experience and a test of true human spirit. The Ultra Marathon Cycling Association (UMCA) have sanctioned the event and made it part of their World Cup series and it is a registered cycling Ireland Event.
The Race Around Ireland organisers see this event as a tremendous challenge for all competitors, no matter what the fitness level or cycling experience. It is designed to test each rider and team and bring out a sense of camaraderie and feeling of accomplishment second to none.
However, it is not only about the riders, but, a fantastic opportunity for Clubs to create awareness and promotion through taking part in this very unique challenge.
The Race Around Ireland has already captured the imagination of the public and a documentary will be filmed with the aim of having it shown on Setanta Sports and other networks.
It has been sanctioned by the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association (UMCA), and included in the World Cup Series. It is a registered Cycling Ireland event and being organised in association with Navan Road Club and the Irish Sports Academy.
How Can Your Club get involved?
Enter a Soloist or Team
There are three divisions in this event, solo, 4 person and 8 person teams. You may wish to use existing members of the Club, but, you could also create a media buzz around your area by advertising that you are looking for people to take part in the event and run trials over a few months, to pick your team. This is a great way to create more exposure through media and also increase membership numbers.
You may also wish to ride for a charity and raise money and exposure for that chosen cause. The Race Around Ireland is not associated with a specific charity and so your Club could choose a charity close to their hearts.
If you decide to enter a team or individual in the event, the organisers can help you promote your Club.

Man a time station (if one around your area)
The second way that your club could become involved in the race is to design and run a time station and organise activities on that weekend to promote your club. Activities can be promoted through local media, but may also be mentioned nationally as the cyclists make their way around the country. All time stations and activities will be included on the Race Around Ireland website. There will also be a prize for the best time station and we can assist you in designing it.
